Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. When she was a little girl, she struggled with an obsessional disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word association. Ford was interested in acting during her teenage years and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that this school wasn't right for her. Ford applied instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won the position she wanted on her third try. A classmate of hers included Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford did not complete her degree until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in the year 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate was also a regular performer as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate was recognized for her stand-up comedy, which has been added to her portfolio in 1996.
